Biographical / Historical
Challenge '70 was a capital funding campaign to raise money for four projects:
1. Fine Arts Center, $2,6000,000
2. Social Sciences Center, $1,3000,000
3. Women's Residence Hall, $450,000
4. Campus Renewal, $300,000
On Sept. 18, 1970 a Challenge '70 dinner for 255 people was held at the Balboa Bay Club in Newport Beach where John Wayne was presented the First Patron's Award of Aretas Megistas, "in recognition of his eloquent stand and towering influence in support of Judeo-Christian traditions and Ideals on the college campuses of America." The event was hosted by Dr. and Mrs. Arnold O. Beckman, The Honorable and Mrs. Thurmond Clarke, Mr and Mrs. J. Simon Fluor, Mr. and Mrs. Clement L. Hirsch and Mr. Robert Guggenheim.
Many actors and actresses and dignitaries were in attendance including Andy Devine, Buddy Ebsen and his wife, Pilar Wayne, Olive Carey, and Mrs. Barry Goldwater. Two students, Jill Buckingham, from the main campus and Chief Master Sargeant Jim L. Collins from the Vandenburg campuse spoke at the dinner.
Chapman President John L. Davis and former President Donald Kleckner were allso in attendance.
