Biographical / Historical

The Great Films Guild was started in February 1958 by Kurt Bergel of the faculty, and Norman Gooden, manager of the Orange Theater (on North Glassell at the corner of Maple). This series initiated what would become an important part of the Chapman College culture. The first showing featured two Academy Award-winning movies, La Strada and The Red Balloon. This series continued for many years (until about 1981) and attracted community patrons as well as students. pp. 115-116, Fulfilling a Dream: The History of Chapman University, by Louise Booth.
