Distance Learning Programs historical note

Chapman College established its first Residence Education Center (REC), a distance learning program, in 1958 at the El Toro Marine Air Station, Orange County, CA. REC was initially designed to provide US Service members opportunities to complete their undergraduate degrees while serving but eventually expanded to admit civilian students as well.

REC was renamed the Division of Residence Education Center in 1967 and had Academic Centers on eight Marine Corps and Air Force bases in California. For a list of REC/Academic Centers sites from 1958 to 2000, please review "appendix 3: Important Lists" of Louise Booth's "Fullfilling Dream: The History of Chapman University." In 2001, the Academic Centers were reorganized into the Chapman University College (CUC) and in 2008 was renamed Brandman University. A year later, Brandman University incorporated and separated from Chapman University. Some materials in this collection contains folders with titles such as "Commencement, North" and "Commencement, South" that may have been produced for Brandman University and/or other Chapman University Distance Learning programs. Further research is required to better identify the nature of these record's creation.

According to the University of Massachusetts Global "About UMass Global" website:

In May of 2021, Brandman University formed a strategic partnership with the University of Massachusetts, and in September 2021, became University of Massachusetts Global, a non-profit affiliate of the University of Massachusetts system.

Office of Student Affairs Timeline historical note

According to Chapman University Directories, the Office of Student Affairs has operated out of primarily the same administrative parent unit, but under multiple department name changes including:

  • 2017(?) - Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students
  • 2014 - Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Dean of Students
  • 2002 - Office of the Vice President and Dean of Students
  • 1998 - Office of the Vice President and Dean of Student Life
  • 1997 - Office of Student Activities/Office of Dean of Students (?)
  • 1992 - Office of Student Life
  • 1979 - Office of Student Development
  • 1973 - Office of Student Affairs
  • 1947 - Office of the Dean of Students

Prior to 1947, available Chapman College Directories and yearbooks do not list a dedicated "Office of Student Affairs." Instead that function existed primarily through one position, that of a "Dean of Students" throughout the 1940s. In the 1930s, versions of this position likely existed as a "Dean of Men" or "Dean of Women."

As of approximately 2017 the unit operates under the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students. (Parenthetical question marks in the name change timeline denote the impreciseness of the information found.)
