Scrapbook of United States Navy ensign
This accession contains one scrapbook from a sailor who served aboard the U.S.S Beaver ARG 18. This album is believed to have been created by U.S. Navy Ensign Herbert A. Zenger (1926–2005) of Portland, Oregon, who initially served aboard the U.S.S. Admiral W.S. Benson AP 120 from San Francisco to Okinawa and subsequently on the U.S.S. Beaver ARG 18. The Beaver arrived at Kure Bay in October 1945, just two days after a typhoon wreaked havoc. The album also contains photographs of street scenes in Japan, including temples, peddlers with their carts, and people in the marketplace. The final section of the album contains photographs of Zenger and his crew-mates aboard the USS Beaver in 1946. According to the annotations in the album, they are in Shanghai, China. The album also includes a few photographs of friends and family at home.
