Identifier: 2021-002-s

Content Description

One binder containing 70 personal correspondence written mainly between an American serviceman, David Luther Joplin (1927-2001), from Southern California and a Japanese woman, Toshiko Sugata Takahashi (1920-2013). They fell in love after World War II, had their daughter Ruth Yuko, and later married. A majority of the letters are from Toshiko to David or his mother Mildred (Mrs. Alex Taylor), while others are letters that Mildred or David sent to Toshiko. There is correspondence between Japanese and US government officials and David about bringing Toshiko and Ruth to America. David and Toshiko's relatives also wrote a few letters that are in this accession.
