Scope and Contents
This series contains photographs of African-Americans in the military, 1970-1973. Photographs include candid press photographs of high ranking African-American military personnel and military action photographs. The series portrays the signficant roles African-American played in the U.S. military. Notable photographs include Major General Benjamin O. Davis, Jr. (highest ranking African-American in U.S. Armed Forces), Captain Samuel L. Gravely, Jr. (first African-American to become an admiral in the Navy), Cleveland Municipal Judge Sara Harper (first woman judge in the Marine Corps.), and a photograph of comedian Dick Gregory with Jane Fonda and Cora Weiss.
