Biographical / Historical
Mary (Platt) MacKinnon (1879-1966) was the aunt of Robert Milton Platt (1920-1995). She was from Coopersville, Michigan. When Robert Platt joined the United States Army Air Force in early 1942 and flew military airplanes during World War II, Mary became very interested in learning to identify the various war aircraft. She maintained a scrapbook of magazine/newspaper clippings that provided facts and information about military aircraft. Some of these clippings were sent from Robert during the war.
Robert Platt served throughout the war flying missions over France, Italy, and Germany. He piloted several different aircraft during World War II for the U.S. Air Force. Later, Robert left the military, married Alice Rivers (who was serving as a Women's Army Corps lieutenant), and became a practicing attorney in Williamston, Michigan. Robert Platt passed away in 1995 and is buried in Coopersville, Michigan.
