Scope and Contents

This album contains over 150 vernacular photographs of Russel Holtry's experiences in the United States Army while stationed on the Texas and New Mexico border during the Mexican Border Crisis (1910-1919).

These photographs document Holtry's experiences on the Texas/ Mexico border and show camp life, tents, buildings, wagons, horses, mules, military vehicles, formations, latrine use, horseplay, field uniforms, a personal equipment inspection, a Mexican smelting operation, Mexican women and children, the Rio Grande, a YMCA, camp stores, blacksmithing, the Alamo, and more.

Biographical / Historical

Russell Holtry (serial number 1517376) originally enlisted in the Ohio National Guard July 11, 1914. He served with the 2nd Battalion, 11th Infantry Regiment on the Texas and New Mexico borders. Holtry served in the 9th company, 3rd Training Battalion at Camp Sheridan to October 27, 1917, as well as serving with Company B, 145th Infantry, he was promoted to Corporal on January 11, 1916 and Sergeant July 27, 1917.

Holtry was severely wounded in action in the Meuse-Argonne sector October 31, 1918 and was honorably discharged January 26, 1919 with a 5% disability.

Physical Description

The album had been previously used as the photographs are glued over older mounts. Several pages have been reinforced with matching paper and there is some wear to the scrapbook cover. The pages are securely attached using a typical post binding; both posts have some rust. The photographs are generally clean with light wear and some soiling, a few have dog-eared or missing corners.
