Daniel A. Himes Persian Gulf War correspondence
Collection — Box: Gulf War 1, Folder: 3
Identifier: 2017-131-w-r
Scope and Contents
This collection contains three correspondence written by serviceman Daniel A. Himes, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, U.S. Army, to his aunt and uncle, Martha and Bob Himes, during the Persian Gulf War.
The letters focus on Himes's daily activities and inquiries about his family members' lives. His daily activities include military training, and sending and receiving mail. He briefly wrote about the flies (insect) of Saudi Arabia in a joking manner. There is a mention of Himes' friend's mom starting a military support group, and as a result of giving his name and address to the support group, Himes started receiving letters almost daily.
In his letters, he shows appreciation to his aunt and uncle for consistently sending him mail and care packages. Himes wrote in his third letter that he owes his aunt and uncle dinner for sending him a care package that helped him with some stomach problems caused by M.R.E's. He wrote "What your package did for my stomach your letters do to my heart." Also in the collection is a page of two photocopied photographs of Himes.
