Marie Hubly Second World War correspondence

This collection contains correspondence from Marie Hubly to PFC Samuel Beckenstein during the Second World War. The nature of their relationship is unknown. Included with this letter is a photograph of Marie Hubly and her family. Also included in this collection is an email correspondence between the donor and archivist of the Center in which the donor explains some of the background of the letter, includes a photocopied photograph of Samuel Beckenstein, and makes some clarifications concerning the date in the letter. In the letter, Marie thanks Sam for sending her pictures and a letter, but were disappointed that he was unable to visit them. She discusses VJ day, saying that her family were on holiday in Brighton during the celebrations. She writes, “We spent a lovely fortnight away and VJ day and night there, everyone went crazy. At first, my hubby and I were rather sorry we were not in London, but the excitement there was just as great.” She also discusses how things will never go back to the way they were before the war saying, “Now at least all the fighting is over, although it seems as though things will never get back to normal. I suppose they will in time. They are certainly not going to clothe us too freely. We have to make our clothing coupons go much farther. And the food problem will be hard this winter, but still as I said before, the fighting is over and also the raids, so we must try and be content.” She also writes about her mother’s illnesses. With the letter a photograph of Marie’s family was included with the inscription “Yours sincerely Marie + Phil, Stanley + Ruth 1944.”
