Terry Lee Sloan Vietnam War correspondence

 Collection — Box: Vietnam 3, Folder: 5
Identifier: 2017-244-w-r

Content Description

This collection contains four correspondence written by SP/4 Terry Lee Sloan, USA to Janice Striner during the Vietnam War.

SP/4 Sloan served with Command Communication Center Company in Long Bein [sic], Vietnam writes in an inquisitive tone, asking Janice about her summer and telling her about his pet, Crypto, and seems to be working in an office job. On June 25, 1972 he says he has 168 days to go, however he leaves for rest and relaxation in the US the next day and returns to Vietnam on July 11. He told Janice that he "got a drop from Vietnam" and expects to leave the country for good on August 15, though he actually leaves on August 21. He told only her, and she should not tell Sally, because there is a "50/50 chance" that he could get picked up by another unit and have to stay.

His service with the Army continued and he was stationed at the Pentagon, which he liked, writing in December 1972 that he has only six months of service remaining and thanking her for her correspondence while he was overseas. It is noted that a Christmas card and photo were sent though they are not included here.

Biographical / Historical

Specialist Fourth Grade Terry Lee Sloan, United States Army lived at some time in Apollo, Pennsylvania where Janice Striner lived during their correspondence. Janice is a friend of SP/4 Sloan's cousin, Sally Ann McCutcheon Jankosky, and at the time was a school age girl writing as a sort of pen pal. Sloan also mentions his wife being a part of the Apollo Legionettes, a drum and bugle corps, when they were going steady. This is in reference to Janice's membership in the Allegheny Township Blazers, a rival corps.
