Jean Smolen Second World War correspondence
Content Description
This collection contains correspondence to Jean Smolen from her brother and two other correspondents during the Second World War. Included are three postcards from Private Vito A. "Tony" Quaranta, United States Army, one V-mail from Corporal Ted C. Matlak, and one V-mail from Jean's brother Private Walter J. Smolen, United States Army(b. 1922?).
Pvt. Quaranta wrote from France and Denmark and calls Jean "dearest" and says I love you, signed "Tony". One postcard includes a cartoon of Spencer Tracy. Pvt. Quaranta served with Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 341st Infantry at Camp Howard, Texas. He served with Hq. Co. 2nd Bn, 116th Inf. in France. He then served with Hq. Co. 29th Inf. Division in Denmark.
Cpl. Matlak sent a premade V-mail Christmas card from New Guinea. He served with Co. "D" 108th Medical Battalion.
Pvt. Smolen senta a premade V-mail Christmas card from England that says "Greetings from Britain." He served with the 77th Troop Carrier Squadron, 435 Troop Carrier Group.
