Content Description

This collection contains three (partial) correspondence from Private Francis "Frank" Glab to his fiance Maggie, who would later become his wife, during the Civil War. Glab served the Union with the 21st Regiment, Iowa Infantry. Also included is a note from the donor on the music and the unit to which Pvt. Glab was attached, as well as a transcription of the English language letter.

One of the letters is written in German from Matagorda Isle, Texas on June 1st, 1864 and contains written music, with lyrics in English, that he wrote for Maggie entitled "To Maggie." The other two are half sheets of paper, one with a poem entitled "Thy Spirit of Love Keeps a Watch Over Me," and the other a torn and partial letter dated July 24, 1864. In that letter, Pvt. Glab describes the situation where he is located in Texas, including "what remains here is the remainder of the 13th A C [Army Corps] and some Nigger troops," and discussing the fact that there were twenty thousand rebels within ten miles of his location that only had eight thousand soldiers. On that letter is a lithograph drawing of "Louis Schwarz 28 Chartres Street, Jackson Square, New Orleans" and was written from Morganzia, Louisiana.
