Content Description

This collection contains two large scrapbooks containing 193 correspondence to Mildred Sutton from family and friends during the Second World War. Included in the correspondence are telegrams, postcards and holiday cards, from nephews of her and her husband, Dr. Frank Sutton, and two sons of the family's landlord (see bio note for identification of authors). Also included in the collection are 71 photographs, 20 clippings, ephemera such as foreign money and brochures, and 6 copies of correspondence to and from Dr. Charles McGarry after his son had been killed in France. The donor also included 5 sheets of biographical and inventory information.

Biographical / Historical

Mildred Sutton was the wife of Dr. Frank Sutton. Dr. Sutton was a physician before he was the Assistant Medical Director, later Medical Director of Rochelle General Hospital. The two lived in Rochester, New York during the Second World War and their nephews, as well as their landlord's two sons, wrote to them during the war. They include:

  • Was a corporal, knocked down to private, then promoted to PFC

Private First Class Gladwin K. Fuson, United States Army
  • Son of Clara Sutton Fuson
  • Battery E 420th C.A. (A.A.), later Battery C
  • 474 Ordinance Evacuation Co. (Camp Hood, TX)
  • Served in Alaska


Private Philip A. McGarry, United States Army
  • From Chicago, Illinois. Unknown relation to the Suttons, but known by the Neiderbergers in Chicago
  • Co. I 377th Infantry (Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania)
  • Army Special Training Unit 3307th Service Unit, University of Pittsburgh
  • Killed in Action in Metz, France, November 11, 1944

Processing Information

This collection was donated in the form of an unbound scrapbook. Correspondence and photographs, including ephemera and clippings, were either glued to the pages or afixed to photo corners. The correspondence, in particular, was folded into their original envelopes and the envelopes were glued to the pages.

For preservation and access purposes, further processing may need to be considered. At the time of initial processing, it was decided to keep the materials in their original order.
